Mijn verhaal
Learning with H O R S E S. 1:1 Coaching for Inner Growth
Since childhood something inside me knew horses held a special kind of wisdom. I also knew I couldn't grasp it. Riding at the local horse center was joyful but also disturbing, making me angry or scared at times. Fourty years later, taking my inner child seriously led me to commit to the Medicine Horse Way, part of the Eponaquest school. After taking the Nature of Wisdom programme in 2022, I completed the Level 1 Medicine Horse Way training in 2023. I am currently enrolled in Level 2 Eponaquest Nederland, and completing the 101 Connections module by Linda Kohanov.
Today, I know deeply, with every part of me, that horses can teach us the art of being present, and to hold space with the unease and ease of life's roller coaster. And I'm happy to share this with my coachees, using the Epona Quest toolbox.
Mijn missie & ambitie
Through the daily work with horses, I gain insight in patterns of behaviour that limit me, and what it takes to function more fluidly in my life and relationships. I also learn, again and again, to set healthy boundaries and take up the space I need to feel connected and present at any given moment.
From receiving to giving: learning with horses
Do you love being outside too and are you curious what you can learn from horses in relation to things you struggle with? If so, drop me a line so we can make an appointment for an informal intake by phone/video call. I will tell you a bit more about what experiential learning with horses entails and how I structure a coaching journey. Together we can see if this approach is right for you at this time.
A few words from previous clients about their journeys
" I remember going from feeling lonely and small in the paddock to relaxed and more conscious towards the end, and I liked feeling that sense of quietness and reflecting on where I came from." – Seb
" Igor [the horse] was already responding to me in his behaviour before I realised/understood what I was feeling myself, it was always right and usually meant staying away from me. I also really liked Sophie's translation or feedback, [bringing] my thoughts/ideas about the horses back to myself and my own behaviour." - Céleste
In short
- I facilitate coaching sessions in English, Dutch or French

Mijn inzet
By learning to become horse-like and by training horse speak, I aim to align better with their world, both as a human and as a rider. I am dedicated to honor the well-being and needs of horses, and want to contribute to a non-violent and inclusive equestrian world.
I also intend to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the horse-human relationship through my artistic work: my next book will address the art of presence that horses practice naturally.
I vow to continue to 'take my own medicine' to improve my horsemanship and coaching kills and become a more wholesome human being. Centered Riding (Sally Swift), the Three Tenets (Zen buddhism), and Focusing (Gene Gendlin, Nathasha Lythgoe) are on top of my list.

Through my work as relational artist I interweave biographies of beings and places, and conceive tools and situations for collective narration and reflection. My practice alternates between extended periods of fieldwork with local communities, and editorial work. Between 2004 and 2009 I headed the undergraduate programme designLAB (Rietveld Academie, NL). Between 2015 and 2020, I developed and led the Art & Design Practice track at University College Roosevelt (NL), one of the international honours colleges of Utrecht University: a practice-based track about visualising ideas in the spirit of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Both experiences nourished my interest in alternative pedagogies, in particular nature-based learning.

In 2016, I spent 6 weeks helping with groom work and horse handling in an ethological horse centre in Centre Bretagne, France. I slept in a camper van looking out on their paddock, helped mend fences in a storm when the herd escaped, and witnessed a foul being born on full moon (we named him Helio!). I then travelled to Iceland where I joined local horse people who where leading their herd to summer mountain pastures. A childhood dream come true: hundred fifty horses galloping besides me. The reality was mind-blowing and harsh – I was very cold and had saddle pain for days. I stayed six weeks in Iceland, taking care of 5 mares who needed Tölt training – a lonesome, difficult time – the mares weren’t easy on me. But I came back to mainland Europe feeling strong and determined.

Since 2020, I take care of Welsh Cob Igor on a weekly basis: feeding, riding, and grooming, as well as thinking along with his owner how to approve the facilities (tack room, stable, paddock paradise). This work – that doesn't feel like work! – got me acquainted with all facets of horse life including health and food. Last summer, mare Belle enriched the family after little Loesje departed. Together Igor & Belle teach me all about herd dynamics.
